Over the years, the MTV Movie & TV Awards has been billed as the alternative to traditional award shows, or the “Oscars for millennials.”

The current trend for irreverent humor on mainstream awards shows can be traced back to MTV, which properly gets credit for deconstructing the format.

Honors for directing, makeup, or technical achievement are still not making the cut. Instead, MTV continues to put the spotlight on performances that are truly crowd pleasing — such as “Best Kiss”, “Best Hero” and “Best Villain”.

In short, MTV never pretends to be an industry insider. It just knows what its target audience likes. Of course, there are bills to pay – so product placement, in the form of trailers for summer blockbusters, are also a major part of the springtime awards broadcast.

In 2017, the MTV Movie Awards became the MTV Movie & TV Awards – with the news that it was adding favorite television categories to the list of nominees. More newsworthy, that same year men and women began competing equally in the acting categories.

DID YOU KNOW? MTV Movie & TV Awards fun facts

• When a fully-dressed Zac Efron accepted his Best Shirtless Performance Award in 2014, he tried to ignore the crowd’s pleas to “take it off”. Then, suddenly, a lusty Rita Ora appeared on stage to make the audience’s wish come true — adding to a long list of MTV Movie Awards’ most memorable moments.

• The MTV Movie Awards are famous for steamy makeout sessions, but the makeout scene between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams was one for the history books as winners for Best Kiss (for “The Notebook”). In 2005 their live reenactment was even more notable for the fact that off-screen they really couldn’t stand each other!

• Not many actors walk away with three MTV Movie Awards in one night, but Robert Pattinson has done it twice. In 2010, Pattinson won Best Male Performance, Best Kiss (with Kristen Stewart) and the Global Superstar Award. The following year, he repeated for Best Male Performance, Best Kiss (with Kristen Stewart) and added Best Fight to his 2011 list of accolades.
